UPDATE 5/07/2019

  • Announcements:

    • We are crazy busy wrapping up the school year with state testing, projects, field trips, activities, all while continuing to learn.  Because of this, we are also all feeling a little spring feverish, maybe a little stressed from state testing, and nervous about transitioning to to middle school and 5th grade next year.  Let’s keep encouraging, reassuring, supporting, and guiding our kids for their next adventure. They are all ready for it!

    • A word about state testing- It is long and hard.  Some students are feeling overwhelmed and self doubt is seeping in.  As I tell my students, this is a brief, minor snapshot of their year.  This test does not know them like we do. It does not determine their self worth, kindness, and value.  It does not know that they love to draw, sing, and play instruments. It does not know they are athletes: baseball players, gymnasts, softball players, soccer players, ice skaters, basketball players, golfers, fencers.  It does not know they are animal lovers, advocates, video game masters, world travelers. It does not know they are voracious readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists. It does not know they are inquisitive and thoughtful, good friends, tough and sensitive.  There are SO many ways to define them, a test is not one of them. I am privileged and proud to be their teacher. They are amazing, awesome, and SMART.

    • THANK YOU for all the love I am feeling for TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.  I am so blessed to do what I love. That you for supporting me and trusting me.  It means the world!

CURRICULUM:

    • Language Arts:

      • Reading: We have been reading poems and making inferences.  We will end the year with Book Clubs. Students will choose a book they would like to read. We will form groups  based on their choice. Each session there will be a mini-lesson on a reading strategy and then they kids will apply and discuss.  Reading will be done on their own- in class or at home. It is important they keep up with the assigned reading so they are accountable when groups meet.  

      • Writing: I am seeing a lot of improvement in writing.  5th grade is really starting to use voice, quotes, and leads.  4th grade is expanding their writing into multiple paragraphs. We are working on figurative language, summary writing, and will conclude this year with a Unit on Opinion Writing.

      • Read Aloud: We finished Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli.  We have started Holes by Louis Sacher summary-

      • Math: We are at it! We have taken multiple quizzes which will come home for a signature so you can see how your child is doing with the work.  

    • Social Studies:

      • 4th grade if finishing up with a unit on the Gold Rush- Focusing on how the different mining methods changed and effected the on CA Ecosystem

      • 5th grade is ending with a unit on Civil Rights  

      • Science: We are starting two new focus areas for science for the remainder of the year.  We will look at Earth and Sun as well as Life Science.

  • Monday: PE at 9:25-10:25; 4th grade garden 12:30-1:45; 5th grade garden 1:50-3:00

  • Tuesday: Music 2:00-3:00

  • Announcements:

    • Thank you everyone who came to Student-Led Conferences.  It was fun watching your kids take such pride and ownership in their work and their challenges.  I cannot tell you how much they have grown over the past 2 years (5th) as well as just this year (4th) I really cherish and applaud their effort and your trust in me over the year(s).  I will be sad to see the 5th graders go, but they are ready to spread their wings and soar. HOWEVER, we still have so much to accomplish. Here are some dates to keep in mind. Please be aware these dates can change and times will be posted later.

      • Reading: 5th grade has started an IBD (Integrated By Design) unit around Theme.  We are reading short stories and will explore big ideas, theme (based on inferences backed by evidence), and character.  4th grade is reading, and enjoying, By The Great Horn Spoon focusing on many different standards.

      • Writing: I am seeing a lot of improvement in writing.  5th grade is really starting to use voice, quotes, and leads and 4th grade is expanding their writing into multiple paragraphs.  We are working on Wax Museum and Historical Figure Reports and will conclude this year with a Unit on Opinion Writing.

 

      • Root Words: Both 4th and 5th grade are learning about word parts, prefixes, suffixes which will aide in spelling and understanding of word definitions

      • Read Aloud: We started  Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli summary- Maniac Magee

      • Math: We are at it! We have taken multiple quizzes which will come home for a signature so you can see how your child is doing with the work.  

        • 4th grade: Module 4: Angle Measure and Plane Figures Module 4 and Module 5: Fraction Equivalence, Ordering, and Operations Module 5

      • 4th grade will be discussing the role of the Franciscan missionaries in the change of economy and the use of land in California.  They will be comparing the 3 majors systems of living: Missions, Pueblos, and Rancheros

      • 5th grade will look at the colonization, migration, and settlement patterns of the American people from  1789-1800s with an emphasis on the changing economy, and effects on the physical and political geography, and transportation systems.  

      • Science: We are starting two new focus areas for science for the remainder of the year.  We will look at Earth and Sun as well as Life Science.

UPDATE 2/27/2019

 

  • Announcements:

    • I hope everyone had a nice relaxing break!  We spent some time up the coast in Mendocino County enjoying the fresh ocean air and downtime.

    • We had a great trip to the Oakland Museum January 30th and a cold day yesterday on Lake Merritt.  We were disappointed not to get out on the water but we look forward to lots of boating tomorrow.

    • We may have an opportunity to go to Rhythmix on March 14th.  If we are moved from the waiting list, it will be last minute.  I will just need a few chaperones and Rhythmix will provide the transportation.  I will keep you posted.

    • We are coming up on Student-Led Conference and the start of the last trimester of 4th and 5th grade! Where has the time gone?? If you have not done so already, please sign-up using the sign-up genius link I sent out a few weeks ago.  It is a powerful time to spend with your child. They will talk to you about things that they have accomplished with ease but will also discuss what has been challenging and what they may need help with. The conference typically takes an hour and there will be multiple families in the room at a time.  

    • 5th grade will start MOCHA- an art program taught by an art teacher focusing on Civil Rights.  This is a wonderful program that incorporates art and history. It will run on Fridays from 10:40-11:45 from 3/8 -5/3.

    • The 4th grade team spoke about the current lice breakout. The district has changed the policies regarding lice notification, and we think you are receiving less information in prior years (our opinion only).  We know it continues to be an issue in our grade. So far, I have had no known outbreaks, but please check your kids. If you find nits or lice, please treat them and let the office know.

  • Language Arts:

Announcements: 

  • Thank you to Ron and Sara for accompanying our 4th graders to Coloma.  We had wonderful weather, learning and grade level community building going on.  We loved having Ms. Garner along as well.
  • 5th grade will take off on January 23-25 for Marin- Thank you Lina, Jen, and Janine for chaperoning!
  • Oakland Zoo field trip is CANCELED! But we have a trip planned to the Oakland Museum on January 30th.  It is not an ideal day since we get out at 1:10, but we will make the most of our time. I will need drivers/chaperones for this trip. I will send home forms January 7th.  Our trip will be led by docents focusing on “Coming to California.”
  • December 21: PJ day and class holiday party 2-3pm.  Please bring a mug to enjoy some hot coco and a snack to share.

  • Oakland Zoo FIELD TRIP WILL BE RESCHEDULED!

  • I am sure you have heard by now, but the Alameda Unified School District teachers’ union has filed an impasse over contract negotiations.  We will be going to mediation on Wednesday, November 14th. 

  • I will go from a bi-monthly update schedule to once a month and as needed basis.  Look for the email in your inbox.

  • We have closed first trimester and have begun second.  The year is flying by and we have so much to accomplish.  I look forward to meeting with you in a few weeks.

  • Since bad air quality seems like the new normal, I would encourage you to invest in a filtered mask for your child.  They sell child sizes on Amazon. If we all have mask, I can take the kids out for small breaks during the day. Please remember to send a water bottle and layers for changing temperature in the classroom.  We are on a rainy day protocol, however on rainy days we can open window and doors, smokey days we cannot.

  • Coloma- Potential chaperones- I haven't forgotten about you!  We are on a hold from Coloma on how many female and male chaperones we will need.  I promise, I will let you know soon.

  • Marin- 5th grade paperwork was sent home today.   Due November 9th!

      • Reading:We started AUSD adopted curriculum, Center for the Collaborative Classroom, referred to as CCC.  I will meet with 5th grade for 5th grade reading and 4th grade for 4th grade reading. This allows for small group instruction as well as focusing in on the specific standards for each grade.  We have started a unit on Expository Text.

      • Writing: Every day we write.  Every Friday we publish one of the paragraphs we wrote during the week.  So far, the kids have published 10 paragraphs on their chromebook in Classroom.We have wrapped up our fiction writing and will start Personal Narrative next week.  

      • Root Words: Both 4th and 5th grade are learning about word parts, prefixes, suffixes which will aide in spelling and understanding of word definitions

      • Read Aloud: We are reading Shooting Kabul by N.H Senzai Shooting Kabul summary I will go back to Maniac Magee after Shooting Kabul

      • What a great way to end a unit!  Our Immigration Interviews were awesome.  The kids were engaged, respectful, and curious.  If you haven’t done so already, ask them about last Friday.  They are currently presenting back to the rest of the class about the person they interviewed.  Powerful stuff!

    • Science:

      • We are about the conclude our second investigation- Developing Models: Black Boxes, Drought Stopper, and Models for Change in Properties

UPDATE 10/26/18

 

  • I assigned new home base seats. By filling out a survey, students had some input into who, where, and what seats they would like.  I particularly loved the honesty of the kids when writing who they wanted to sit next to, many also wrote the same person as the person that would also distract them the most! :) We start and end everyday at home base and then are able to move around during the day. It seems to be working well.  We are still waiting on two more tractor seats. They should be in next week.

  • Thanks to a donation form the Obots, I have also added a new tool that has increased student participation and taken the strain off our voices!  It is called the Q-Ball. It is a microphone you can toss, roll, and pass. Check out the pictures!

  • Our first trimester grading period is coming to an end! I will send home a Signup Genius link for conferences by next Friday.  Conferences will take place the week of November 26th-30th. Dismissal that week will be 12:30pm.

  • Halloween Parade: Get ready for a parade:  FROM PTSA:

    • You are invited to the first Bay Farm Halloween Parade! It will be on October 31st from 12:30-1:10 around the neighborhood surrounding the school. Kids who are not participating will be able to do crafts in one classroom, supervised by a teacher. Kids are welcome to wear their costumes all day or change into them at lunch. No masks which cover the face and no fake weapons.

 

The parade route will be starting in the quad, then going out Tillman Park, down Kofman Pkwy, up Dublin, then up the tree lined path and back into the quad for a dance party and to hear the results of the pumpkin carving contest. Parents are welcome to dress up too!

 

What I would prefer is to have the room parents (or 1-2 parent volunteers) walk along side the classroom in the parade to keep the kids lined up properly, and have the rest of the parents along the parade route to take pictures.   • Halloween in class/party:  I am planning some Science activities and will NOT have a party the day of Halloween.  Our class party will be on Friday, November 2nd. November 2nd is also El Dia De los Muertos.  In order to pay tribute to those we have lost, we will build an altar and celebrate their time on earth with a party  including pictures, stories, food. We will then watch COCO in the afternoon. Thank you Tali, Judy, Mary-Jane, Sara and Anna for volunteering for November 2nd.

UPDATE 10/12/2018

 

  • After our setback last week, we are back to our fabulous selves.  It was great learning opportunity to show how individual behavior affects the whole group dynamic.  Another motivator to gain flexible seating back was the delivery of our Donors Choose project materials.  We received 2 adjustable Hokki-like stools, 6 more picnic chairs, 2 tractor seats. We are still awaiting 2 more tractor seats to add to the choices.  I think I can confidently say we are stocked and fully loaded with many choices for successful learning to take place.

  • Coloma- We have a 100% return on our Coloma forms and payments.  THANK YOU. I will contact those who were chosen to chaperone in a few weeks.  We had quite a few applications. Thank you for the interest.

  • Marin- 5th grade paperwork was sent home today.   Due November 9th

    • Language Arts:

      • Reading:We started AUSD adopted curriculum, Center for the Collaborative Classroom, referred to as CCC.  I will meet with 5th grade for 5th grade reading and 4th grade for 4th grade reading. This allows for small group instruction as well as focusing in on the specific standards for each grade.  

      • Writing: Every day we write.  Every Friday we publish one of the paragraphs we wrote during the week.  So far, the kids have published 8 paragraphs on their chromebook in Classroom. Our current writing assignment is a fictional story.  The kids have begun to write about a powerful mask they found and what happens when the mask is worn. We made the masks in our first Art Docent class led by Kevin Dong.  

      • Root Words: Both 4th and 5th grade are learning about word parts, prefixes, suffixes which will aide in spelling and understanding of word definitions

      • Read Aloud: We finished The Witches by Roald Dahl The Witches today. Up next is Maniac Magee Maniac Magee Summary  

      • Math: We are at it! We have taken multiple quizzes which will come home for a signature so you can see how your child is doing with the work.  

      • 4th grade: Module 3: Multi-Digit Multiplication and Division Module 3

      • 5th grade: Module 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions Module 2

        • Mid Module will be Wednesday October 17th

    • Social Studies:

      • We have begun a unit on Immigration.  We will research our own names and family genealogy, the Waves of Immigration into the United States, and end with a culminating project of interviewing an immigrant.  We will tie this unit into IBD as well as current events.

        • We have finished 3 waves of Immigration:

          • Wave 1: European Colonists and Involuntary Immigrants

          • Wave 2: 1820s-1880s: Chinese and Irish Immigration

          • Wave 3: 1880s-1940s: Italians, Easter Europeans; Ellis Island, Angel Island:

          • We will end our unit with Wave 4: 1965- Current:  students will interview immigrants and give a presentation telling the story of the person they interviewed

          • HELP- if you are a first generation immigrant, or know someone who would like to be interviewed by eager 4th and 5th graders, please let me know.  Interviews will be held on November 9th at 12:45. A small group of students will interview and record.

    • Science:

      • Due to some very overcast days a few weeks ago, we had to switch gears from Earth and Stars to Mixtures and Solutions.  We concluded our first investigation on making and separating mixtures using a solute and solvent. Up next is separating a dry mixture.   Ask your kids about the different states of matter.

  • We are in the full swing of school, learning is happening and kids are thriving.  We are using Flexible Seating appropriately and are learning to self monitor behavior. We are having a blast.   

    • Language Arts:

      • Reading: Inquiry By Design (IBD): We have finished reading “America America” by Martin W. Sandler. We picked out the Main Ideas for each of the 5 sections and made a list of Hardships that immigrants faced.  We are currently reading “Going to America” an excerpt from A Place for Us by Nicholas Gage.  We will then write an essay answering the question, What were the most important qualities that immigrants of the early twentieth century needed in order to come to America? We will state a claim and back it up with evidence.

      • Writing: Every day we write.  Every Friday we publish a paragraph form the week.  So far, the kids have published 5 paragraphs on their chromebook in Classroom. The kids have also chosen a Fairy Tale to rewrite, showing the point of view of a minor character or a continuation story of the tale. We are typing our final drafts of our story and will be illustrating a book to go with our writing.

  • Welcome to the first official update for the 2018-2019 school year! Thank you everyone who came to Back to School Night to find out about me, our classroom, and curriculum.

Highlights:

  • In my updates, I will break down what is happening in class in each subject area as well as include links that you can use to support your child. Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns about material being covered or questions that arise.  Make sure you check out the upcoming events below. 

    • Language Arts:

      • Reading: Inquiry By Design (IBD): We have begun by looking at how we set up a Literacy Notebook, how to choose books, book recommendations, and will start note-taking next week with non-fiction text on Immigration.  This unit will be referred to as: The Push and Pull of Immigration.

      • Writing: We are setting up our writing spirals, generating ideas on what to write, and listening to mentor texts about Fairy Tales- We are looking at point of view and alternatives to the classic Fairy Tale.  Students will begin a writing project and retell a classic in the perspective of a supporting character.

      • Read Aloud: The Witches by Roald Dahl The Witches

    • Math:

      • 4th grade: Module 1: Place Value, Rounding, and Algorithms for Addition and Subtraction Module 1

WELCOME!!

Welcome to a new school year!  I am excited to welcome back my 4th graders as my new 5th graders, and I look forward to getting to know all of my incoming 4th graders this year ( I already know everyone's names!).  It is going to be another fun, exciting, fresh new year. We will continue to read rich literature in many different ways- independent, shared, whole group, and fun read alouds that range from entertaining to thought provoking.  Currently we are reading an entertaining book by Roald Dahl called The Witches. Writing will encompass genres from personal narrative, reports, stories, and much more. Math we will continue to develop more in-depth knowledge of place value, fractions and decimals, geometry, word problems, etc.  In Social Studies we will start with a whole class Immigration unit which will tie in current events. But, in general, 4th grade will cover CA History and 5th will begin learning about the History of the United States. In Science we will continue studying Earth Science, Life Science, and Physical Science.  

 

I implement a flexible seating environment where the students have the ability and power to make many of their choices throughout the day.  I foster a supportive learning environment which enables my students to be in control of their learning. I will guide them and help them make appropriate choices but ultimately it is up to them.  

 

I will talk more about how the 4/5 will work this year at Back to School Night on August 28th at 7:00PM.
